Abercwmdai — Building a Story Before the Story Begins

A good trailer creates curiosity, establishes tone and gives an audience a reason to keep watching. My work on Abercwmdai brings together trailer production, visual identity, editing, storytelling and sound to introduce an original Welsh animated comedy.

The creative challenge

Introduce a world. Give it a recognisable voice.

Abercwmdai is presented as a little Welsh town with a lot going on. Its promotional material introduces a cast of larger-than-life locals and a clear sense of place. The trailer’s job is to bring that personality across quickly, without needing to explain every character or story.

Establish the tone

Give the audience a feel for the comedy and the world they are entering.

Create curiosity

Use moments and characters to invite interest in the wider project.

Build recognition

Connect the visuals, title and promotional presentation so they feel like one production.

Finding the visual identity

An identity that belongs to the story

My work includes the show’s visual identity and logo treatment, alongside the trailer’s ending and branding. The title needs to feel connected to the world on screen and remain recognisable when it appears in promotional material.

The identity work sits alongside the editing and storytelling, giving the audience a name and visual reference to take away from the trailer.

Building the trailer

Shot selection, pacing and a reason to keep watching

Trailer construction brings the individual pieces into a sequence: choosing what to show, how long to stay with it and where to move next. My work combines story structure, shot selection, editing and transitions with the visual identity.

Sound and pacing

Music and sound influence the rhythm of a trailer as much as the picture edit. The work includes sound and music integration, considering how the audio supports the mood, transitions and ending.

The final reveal

The trailer ending and title branding give the sequence a clear close. Bringing the show identity into that final presentation helps connect the name Abercwmdai with the world the audience has just seen.
